Environmental Agency EPEAT Recognizes Apple

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) Recognizes Apple’s effort.

The Apple MacBooks have achieved EPEAT, a US PC environmental rating organization, Gold, which is no simple task. It means that the machines far surpass the requirements of Energy Star 4.0 and the European Union’s RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances) directive. The systems contain no brominated flame retardants, use only PVC-free internal cables and components, and use energy efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass.

Moreover, the systems have a modular design for easier upgrading and disassembly. A minimum of 90% of the machines’ components are reusable or recyclable — even the product packaging is 90 percent recyclable.

Apple knowing its obligation as a global citizen has made admirable strides toward greening the systems. And their products are a lot less environmentally friendly than those of other competitors such as Toshiba. A gold rating means a product passed strict criteria.

Cheaper handsets Affects Nokia’s Profit

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Nokia Corp., the world’s most prominent cell phone manufacturer, lost market share in the third quarter as revenues sank 30% due to descending sales and cheaper handsets sold.

Nokia said its market share in the period fell to 38% — down from 39% in 2007 and 40% in the previous quarter. It sold nearly 118 million handsets, up from 112 million during the same period last year.

Last month, Nokia had admonished that its market share would drop due to price cuts by competitors, but said it would not change its strategy.

In spite of the worldwide financial meltdown, Nokia said it anticipates sales to gain in the final quarter, with a potential slim increase in market share. It gave no figures. Nokia repeated its forecast that the overall industry will grow 10% in 2008, reaching 1.26 billion cell phones sold by the end of the year.

It does not, however, include support for EV-DO Rev. A. Even with this upgrade, the Ace still has the original version of EV-DO. Users can now do business wherever thay are and the ACE’s new features make working while on-the-go even better.
